Bathroom and kitchen renovation guide

August 3, 2021

With Bathrooms and kitchens being the most popular renovation, this short guide will be sure to help you with where to start and what will get you the most out of it.

So first things first, where do you start?

My first suggestion is to identify the space and lay out, two key components to a successful renovation. Using the space well will make sure you fit in all necessities of the renovation as both bathrooms and kitchens require specific components such as ovens, dishwashers, cook tops, fridges - all the way to showers, baths, vanities and towel rails etc. To help visualize where these components go within the space, get the dimensions of your baths, showers etc. and mark these out with masking tape on the floor to see how well they will work. Lay out is important as you want these areas to flow - you don't want to hop out of the shower and have to trek water across the floor just to get a towel. So put some thought into it, find the space that works just to reach out after a shower to access a towel. Same goes for the kitchen, think about the distance form the dishwasher to the cutlery and crockery storage, or perhaps from the cooktop to the fridge and pantry.

Struggling for space?

Don't be afraid to consider taking out a wall to increase the space. All renovations take time and effort no matter how small, so getting it right the first time and being satisfied with the results is important. First place to start with this is to reach out to either a licensed builder or a draftsman to identify if the wall is load bearing. If it is load bearing you will need a consent from the council. People are often afraid of the consent process as it adds extra costs onto the project, but once again this is about getting the most potential out of your renovation. Multiple items can be added onto the one consent, so maybe you take out that wall and at the same time add in that tiled walk in shower you have always wanted? So getting back to space, if taking walls out isn't an option, instead of larger think smarter with clever storage ideas or once again clever layout to ensure the renovation isn't just newer but remains functional.

Being organized is an important part of bathrooms and kitchens.

Not too many of us have the luxury of having multiple bathrooms and kitchens, so when these parts of our household are out of action it is a huge inconvenience. Having set out your bathroom or kitchen to see what is going to work, my best advice would be to pre order the components for the project such as bathroom fittings, kitchenware, fridges etc. Consult with a kitchen design company, let them know what the space is going to be and even get the cabinetry under way as most of it is modular these days too. This will ensure the area getting renovated is out of action for as little time as possible.

Having said all that, don't hesitate to first contact your builder with ideas. And that's not just a sales pitch. We work in with interior designers, architects and draftsmen, even our subtrades such as plumbers and electricians all have fantastic design ideas and solutions so there is always someone for us to point you in the right direction of to get the ball rolling on your project.

Hope you can find some of this useful!

Thanks,
